Philosophical Thinking For Form 1 of secondary schools

format B5, liczba stron 128, oprawa miękka foliowana, ISBN 83-86018-81-X, nr dopuszczenia: 111/01, Warszawa 2001

This textbook describes philosophy as a way of thinking. The book introduces some key philosophical issues concerning the theory of knowledge, ontology, historiosophy, the theory of values, and political philosophy to students. The first chapter is “How philosophy began” followed by “Before philosophy, there were myths”, which acquaints the young reader with the Greek myth about the origins of the world. The reader is invited to interpret the myth and to “philosophize” on the question of whether the myth of patricide is a reflection of human nature, or even of the world.

Each of the textbook’s 18 chapters is constructed in the same way. Following a brief introduction to the themes of the chapter, there is a philosophical text, concluded by exercises for students in which they are invited to interpret the text and “philosophize” about it, or simply to think about the questions which have been set by the book’s authors. The exercises place particular issues in a wider context, in order to avoid unnecessary compartmentalization of knowledge.

The textbook allows students not only to understand the basics of philosophy and to learn to think philosophically, but also to ask philosophical questions, which are the subject of a separate chapter. It explains “why values are worthwhile” and what virtue means. It also answers the basic questions asked by young people who are on the threshold of adulthood, such as “who am I, if I am myself”, “what does it mean to have a place in the universe”, and “what determines the course of our lives- chance or fate?”

Starting with Socrates and Plato, the book goes on to modern times, and refers to the international and supra-national discussions on the borders of Europe which began with the decision to expand the EU. The book includes an appendix on Plato, Socrates and Aristotle, an index of philosophical terms and issues and an index of names. It should also be noted that the book is attractively illustrated with photographs and reproductions of works of art.
